2 Close Support Bomber Control formed in 1941 to develop co-operation between ground and air forces and served in Tunisia, Sicily and Italy.
1 ASSU was formed to co-ordinate aspects of ground-air liaison for the Normandy invasion 1944. 2 and 3 ASSU and 21 ASSU were formed in April 1944 and became 201 Medium Wireless Troop, 3 ASSU in Minden.
It remained there until 1959 when it became The Air Support Signal Squadron of 22 Signal Regiment in Lippstadt. Its role was to co-ordinate the use of ‘special weapons’ BAOR (nuclear).
In 1967 22 Signal Regiment lost the Air Support Squadron as it went to RAF Tangmere in 1969 and absorbed 638 Signal Troop and became 244 Signal Squadron (Tactical Air Support) then moved to RAF Benson in 1971 and following that to RAF Brize Norton from 1976 and operated in the Falklands in 1982 (Op Corporate). Then finally moved to Colerne in August 1992 and reformed with 21 Signal Regiment.
