Served the RAF in the Middle East, RHQ settling at RAF Nicosia. The Regiment reduced to Squadron level on 16th July 1962 and became 261 Signal Squadron. With the Withdrawal from El Adem and the Turkish invasion of Northern Cyprus (rendering the airport at Nicosia unusable) the Squadron's responsibilities were limited to the airfield at RAF Akrotiri and the RAF Troodos/Olympus radar complex. In September 2002, 259 Signal Squadron amalgamated with 12 Signals Unit, RAF, to form the Cyprus Communications Unit.
