Was formed at Kirkburton in March 1943 to support HQ 2 TAF (Main & Rear). The main body of the unit landed in Normandy on 22nd July 1944 and it disbanded in October 1946. The unit title was revived on 1st January 1954, when 83 Group Air Formation Signal Squadron was renamed. The unit was renamed 21st Signal Regiment (Air Formation) in September 1959 and continues to the present day.
The Regiment has combined the roles of Air Formation and Air Support Signals and forms part of the Joint Helicopter Force
