11th Air Formation Signals

Formed at Prestatyn in February 1943 to support 83 (Fighter) Group, RAF, in Operation Overlord. First elements of the unit landed in Normandy on D-Day and commenced active operations that continued, uninterrupted, until the end of the war. The regiment had an area of responsibility from Berlin to the south of France and from Sylt to Austria. During the Berlin Airlift (Which started in June 1948) the strength of the unit increased to 1,000 men.

The unit became 22nd Signal Regiment in September 1959 and soon shed most of its Air Formation commitments to become the HQ 1 (BR) Corps Radio Regiment. The regiment disbanded in September 1992.

22 Signal Regiment was reformed in 2007 Based at Stafford it now incorporates the Ghurka Signals Squadron.
